Saudi Arabia Overcomes Extreme Aridity with Massive Desalination Pipeline Network

Saudi Arabia is confronting extreme environmental conditions, characterized by the fact that more than 95 percent of the country's total land area consists of arid desert. Compounding this geographical challenge, the nation experiences minimal precipitation, recording an annual rainfall of less than 100 millimetres. Furthermore, seasonal climate variations push regional hardships even higher, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.

To sustain its population of 37 million people under these harsh conditions, the kingdom relies heavily on coastal infrastructure to secure vital drinking water. Seawater is collected directly from the ocean at specialized coastal desalination plants, where it undergoes advanced industrial processing and purification before being prepared for inland distribution.

Once the water is treated at the coastal facilities, it is transported deep into the interior of the country through a massive and complex network of industrial pipelines. This infrastructure includes exceptionally large components, featuring pipes with diameters of 1.8 metres and steel walls approximately 25 millimetres thick. Individual pipe sections range from 12 to 18 metres in length, while smaller secondary distribution lines measure 63 centimetres in diameter, collectively enabling a massive daily transport capacity of approximately 15 million litres of water.

Developing and maintaining this critical water supply system requires extraordinary financial commitments from the state and investors alike. Constructing the extensive pipeline networks demands investments running into millions of dollars per kilometre, while building the large-scale desalination plants necessitates capital injections reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.
