Russia Launches Large-Scale Digital Ruble Rollout Across Nation
Russia has officially begun the large-scale rollout of its digital ruble, introducing a third form of the national currency alongside cash and conventional bank accounts. Retailers with high annual revenues are now required to accept the new state-backed digital payment option.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2026, Russia officially initiated the large-scale rollout of its digital ruble, marking a significant milestone in the country's financial infrastructure development. Reported extensively by Anadolu Agency journalist Elena Teslova from Moscow, Russia, this new monetary instrument represents a fundamental shift in how transactions can be conducted within the Russian Federation, adding an entirely digital dimension to the existing monetary ecosystem.
The digital ruble is issued exclusively by the Bank of Russia, also referred to as the Russian Central Bank, establishing it as the third official form of Russia's national currency. This innovative digital tender exists alongside traditional physical cash and conventional bank accounts, giving citizens and institutions another medium for economic exchange backed directly by the central monetary authority.
Despite the nationwide expansion of the digital platform, the Russian Central Bank has emphasized that the use of the digital ruble remains entirely voluntary for everyday consumers. Citizens retain the personal freedom to choose whether they wish to utilize the new digital currency for their daily transactions or continue relying on traditional cash and standard commercial banking methods.
Under the operational framework established for the currency, digital rubles do not earn interest for their holders. Furthermore, all individual and institutional balances are securely held on a specialized platform that is operated and maintained directly by the Bank of Russia, rather than through standard commercial bank ledger systems.
To support widespread adoption, stringent requirements have been placed on the commercial sector in conjunction with the rollout. Specifically, retailers and service providers whose annual revenue exceeds 120 million rubles (approximately $1.38 million) are legally required to allow their customers to pay in digital rubles starting from September 1, 2026. This mandate ensures that the new digital currency has immediate utility across major consumer markets throughout the country.
