Rishabh Pant Surpasses MS Dhoni for Overseas Test Runs in Colombo

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has officially surpassed legendary former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to become India's leading Test run-scorer as a designated wicketkeeper outside of home conditions, or at neutral venues. The significant milestone was reached on Monday, August 24, during an ongoing Test match in Colombo, according to reports from NDTV.

Prior to this achievement, MS Dhoni held the record with a career total of 2,496 runs in overseas and neutral Test matches. With his latest performances in Colombo, Pant has elevated his own career tally to 2,501 runs in these specific conditions, firmly establishing himself at the top of the historical list for Indian cricket.

The journey to the milestone in Colombo featured considerable drama and physical resilience from the Indian player. On Sunday, August 23, during the opening day of the second Test match, Pant sustained a painful blow to his left hand from a sharp delivery bowled by Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiroo Kumara.

Following the blow, Pant managed to score 3 runs from 15 deliveries before being forced to leave the field as retired hurt, heading back to the dressing room for medical attention. The injury raised immediate concerns regarding his ability to continue participating further in the fixture for the Indian team.

However, the determined wicketkeeper returned to the crease on the second day of the match. His return to the batting lineup happened after Saransh Jain was dismissed by bowler Asitha Fernando, with Jain having contributed 6 runs to the scoreboard while Pant ultimately advanced his total to 63 runs.

Pant now sits comfortably atop a prestigious historical list of Indian wicketkeepers in overseas and neutral venue Tests, which includes notable past players such as Farook Engineer with 1,209 runs, Syed Kirmani with 1,109 runs, and Kiran More, who accumulated 901 runs during his career.
