Residents in Northern Japan Use Ropes to Move 360-Ton Castle Tower
Around 1,800 residents in northern Japan used ropes to pull the 360-ton tower of the historical Hirosaki Castle. The effort is part of ongoing restoration work utilizing ancient relocation techniques.

Residents in northern Japan gathered on August 22 to participate in a remarkable historical restoration effort, pulling on ropes to move the massive 360-ton tower of the historical Hirosaki Castle back toward its original location. Approximately 1,800 people came together to manually shift the heavy structure, showcasing a unique community-driven approach to preserving their local heritage in Aomori Prefecture.
To facilitate the complex move, the massive castle tower was placed onto a special system of rails. The organizers employed an ancient Japanese relocation method known as the 'hikiya' technique, which allows heavy architectural structures to be transported safely without causing structural damage to the historic building.
Public involvement in this unique engineering feat has a precedent, as ordinary citizens were first integrated into the hikiya relocation events back in 2015. Such community participation allows local residents to directly engage with the preservation of landmarks that hold deep cultural significance for the region.
The historical significance of the landmark spans centuries, with the original construction of Hirosaki Castle having been completed in 1611, while the current tower itself was constructed later in 1810. These structures represent a vital connection to the area's past and require meticulous planning and execution during restoration phases.
Looking ahead, the extensive restoration project is a long-term endeavor. Once all the necessary reconstruction and preservation work is fully completed, the historic castle is expected to officially reopen to visitors and tourists in the year 2033.
