Paris Grand Mosque Marks Its Centenary After A Century Of History
The historic Paris Grand Mosque in France is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year, marking one hundred years since its official opening. Built to honor Muslim soldiers who fought for France in World War I, the landmark stands as a testament to history.
The Paris Grand Mosque, located in the French capital, has officially completed its historic one-hundred-year milestone in 2026. Originally opened to the public in 1926, the venerable institution has stood for a full century as a prominent cultural and religious landmark in France.
The foundational history of the mosque is deeply rooted in the sacrifices of the First World War. Specifically, the monument was constructed as a solemn tribute to the Muslim soldiers who valiantly fought and sacrificed their lives on behalf of France during the global conflict.
The realization of the monument involved several legislative and architectural phases. In the year 1920, the French parliament officially approved the construction project, setting the legal framework for the memorial. Following the parliamentary green light, the physical construction work on the site officially commenced in 1922.
The grand opening of the institution took place on July 15, 1926. The inaugural ceremony was officiated by high-ranking dignitaries of the era, notably including the-then French President Gaston Doumergue alongside the Sultan of Morocco, Youssef ben Hassan.
Architecturally, the Paris Grand Mosque is renowned for its distinctive design elements. The structure features prominent stylistic influences derived from the traditional Spanish-Moorish architectural tradition. Furthermore, one of its most striking physical features is its soaring minaret, which reaches a height of approximately 33 meters.
