New Zealand Proposes Social Media Ban For Under-16s

The New Zealand government has officially brought forward the comprehensive 'Online Safety Bill' on August 27, 2026, marking a significant regulatory push regarding digital platforms within the country. This legislative measure specifically aims to address growing concerns about youth engagement with digital spaces by introducing a strict ban on social media use for anyone under the age of sixteen.

Under the newly proposed framework, major digital service providers would be legally required to restrict access for younger users. The platforms explicitly named under this sweeping restriction include popular social networks and media-sharing applications such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat, which are widely used by minors across the nation.

To ensure strict enforcement of these proposed age-restriction measures, the legislation outlines severe financial penalties for non-compliance. Companies that fail to properly enforce the rules and maintain the ban face the possibility of being penalized with fines reaching up to ten percent of their total worldwide annual revenue.

Addressing the pressing motivations behind this legislative action, Christopher Luxon highlighted concerning usage trends among adolescents in the country. Services such as WhatsApp, designated online gaming platforms, and certain artificial intelligence tools—including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot—have been formally excluded from this proposed regulatory structure.
