The National Geographic channel has announced the upcoming release of a major new documentary series titled 'Lion', which is scheduled to premiere on August 19, 2026. Following its television broadcast, the production will also become available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu starting on August 20, 2026. The project centers on the remarkable life journey of a real-life wild lion cub named Kio.
Set entirely within the breathtaking landscape of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, the documentary captures the dramatic realities of wildlife survival. The production chronicles the experiences of Kio and the surrounding lion pride over an extensive period of nearly 1,400 days, spanning four years in total. This unprecedented access allowed the filmmaking team to document the pride across fifty-two distinct phases of their natural existence in the African wilderness.

Jon Favreau is closely associated with the series, bringing his extensive storytelling expertise to the wildlife genre.
