Modi and Putin Discuss Defense, Oil Trade and Geopolitical Ties

Indian Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Putin have convened for a significant bilateral meeting centered on expanding cooperation across multiple strategic sectors, including defense, nuclear energy, and oil trade. The high-level discussions between the two leaders also encompassed a broad range of critical geopolitical issues of mutual interest to both nations.

Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship between India and Russia, characterized by substantial fluctuations in crude oil imports over recent months. According to official data, India's oil imports from Russia reached a remarkable peak in July, surging to approximately 2.82 million barrels per day, which accounted for roughly 55.9 percent of India's total crude oil imports.

Following the peak in July, the volume of Russian oil imported by India experienced a notable decline in the subsequent month. By August, this trade figure decreased to approximately 2.08 million barrels per day as global market conditions shifted and Brent crude prices hovered close to the significant threshold of 100 dollars per barrel.

Financial mechanisms supporting this robust trade relationship have also undergone a major transformation to bypass traditional Western currency systems. Data indicates that an overwhelming 96 percent of all bilateral trade transactions conducted between India and Russia are now successfully settled using national currencies, specifically the Russian ruble and the Indian rupee.

In addition to the lucrative energy sector, the bilateral talks addressed advanced strategic capabilities and industrial collaboration. Confirmed reports indicate that Russia has already officially expressed its readiness to supply India with cutting-edge modern military technology, further cementing the long-standing defense partnership between the two countries.
