Meta Imposes New Teen Restrictions on Instagram and Facebook

Technology conglomerate Meta has announced a series of significant new restrictions designed specifically for teenagers using the Instagram and Facebook platforms in the United States. These measures are being implemented to actively reduce screen time and significantly enhance online safety for young users. The regulatory steps form an integral part of a settlement stemming from a lawsuit concerning social media addiction among teenagers in the country.

Under the newly introduced guidelines, teenagers will face a daily usage limit of a maximum of two hours across the platforms. Furthermore, the applications will be completely restricted from being used during the night, specifically between the hours of 12 midnight and 6 in the morning. Additional measures include halting all notifications during school hours, which are designated from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon, while communications with unfamiliar adults will also be strictly limited.

To address privacy and peer pressure concerns, the number of likes on posts will be kept hidden for teenage users. Simultaneously, the company is intensifying its efforts to identify and permanently delete accounts belonging to children who are under the age of 13. Despite these stringent default settings, parents will retain the flexibility to grant permission for their children to use the applications for extended periods through designated parental control systems.

The rollout of these sweeping changes is structured to occur progressively over a specific timeline. Meta has stated that the new restrictions will be implemented in phases over the course of the next six months. Meanwhile, certain modifications and updates concerning comprehensive user age verification processes may require up to a full year to be fully and effectively operationalized across the platforms.
