Mediterranean Shipwreck: 29 Bangladeshis Rescued and 10 Dead Off Egypt
Twenty-nine Bangladeshi undocumented migrants have been rescued alive off the coast of Marsa Matrouh in Egypt following a Mediterranean shipwreck. Ten individuals died after spending nearly 10 days floating at sea on a vessel that departed from Tobruk in Libya.
Egyptian authorities and diplomatic officials have confirmed a maritime tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea involving a boat carrying undocumented migrants. A total of 29 Bangladeshi immigration seekers were rescued alive from the coastal area of Marsa Matrouh in Egypt. Following their rescue, the survivors were promptly transferred to the Marsa Matrouh General Hospital, where they are currently undergoing medical treatment and receiving necessary healthcare services.
According to verified reports, the ill-fated vessel had originally departed from Tobruk in Libya with the ultimate destination of reaching Greece. The boat was carrying a total of 42 passengers on board. This manifest included 38 Bangladeshi nationals and four Sudanese nationals, setting the stage for a perilous journey across the waters of the Mediterranean.
The voyage turned into a prolonged disaster when the boat remained stranded and floating in the Mediterranean Sea for approximately 10 days. The extreme conditions, lack of provisions, and prolonged exposure took a severe toll on the passengers aboard the vessel. Out of the 42 individuals who initially embarked on the journey, a tragic total of 10 people succumbed to illness and passed away while adrift at sea.
Among the 10 fatalities recorded during the ordeal were nine Bangladeshi nationals and one Sudanese national. The heavy human toll highlights the dangers faced by migrants attempting unauthorized sea crossings toward European destinations from North African departure points such as Libya.
In the aftermath of the maritime incident, the Bangladesh Embassy in Cairo has been actively engaged regarding the situation of the affected citizens. Meanwhile, the survivors continue to receive medical attention at the Marsa Matrouh General Hospital. Among those rescued alive, 18 individuals were found in a severely ill and unconscious state, requiring intensive medical observation and care from the local healthcare staff.
