Iran Faces Severe Economic Crisis and Surging Prices Amid War and Sanctions

In 2024, the capital city of Tehran, Iran, is experiencing a profound economic crisis driven by a combination of ongoing war and long-standing international sanctions. Shop sales have dropped by 40 percent, while merchants grapple with inflating operational costs, as explained by shopkeeper Jamir, who stated that everything from workers' wages and raw materials to transportation has gone up in price.

Residents are being forced to drastically alter their lifestyles and abandon long-term financial plans just to survive the current economic climate. Afsaneh, a local resident, described the grim reality by stating that she has cancelled plans such as buying new clothes or changing her car, noting that the goal is now solely to manage food and essential expenses.

To address the financial strain, the government has set the minimum monthly wage at 166 million rials for the current Iranian calendar year. However, citizens continue to navigate severe economic hardship amidst unrelenting sanctions and conflict.
