Indian-Origin US Couple Survives Flash Flood in Nepal

An Indian-origin American couple from San Francisco, Anjana Raja and Pattabhiraman Venkatesan, miraculously survived a severe flash flood and landslide event in the mountainous region near the Nepal-Tibet border. The life-threatening incident unfolded on August 26 as the couple was traveling by bus during their pilgrimage to Tibet. While navigating the treacherous terrain in the Rasuwa district, torrential waters and debris suddenly surged through the area, creating an immediate and catastrophic hazard for everyone on board the vehicle.

Faced with imminent danger as the disaster struck near Timure village, Anjana Raja shouted the urgent warning, "Run!" ("দৌড়াও!"). Taking immediate evasive action, the couple jumped directly out of the moving bus while it was caught in the midst of the flash floods and landslides. Their split-second decision to abandon the vehicle proved critical to their survival as the chaotic natural disaster rapidly overwhelmed the surrounding roadway and landscape.

Following their escape from the bus, the couple had to undertake a grueling physical ascent to reach higher ground and escape the raging floodwaters. Anjana Raja and Pattabhiraman Venkatesan climbed approximately five hundred stairs and scaled a steep slope measuring sixty to seventy feet high, covering a horizontal distance of about fifty feet to rise ten feet above the danger zone. The extreme vertical climb required immense physical effort under terrifying conditions as the mountainous terrain continued to face severe environmental instability.

Reflecting on the harrowing ordeal of staying together while battling the elements, Anjana Raja described the intense psychological strain and her determination to keep her partner safe. "I was making sure that he (Venkatesan) stayed right next to me... I kept holding on to him tightly. I just wanted to have him in my life," she recounted. Having successfully navigated the steep climb away from the flash flood zone, the couple spent the entire night taking shelter inside a local goat shed.

The following day, relief operations reached the stranded survivors, and the couple was successfully rescued by air from their makeshift shelter near the Nepal-Tibet border. Their miraculous survival stands out amid widespread vulnerability in the region, which has been severely impacted by extreme weather events causing flash floods and landslides across the mountainous border territory.
