Households across Bangladesh utilizing automatic and semi-automatic laundry appliances must account for how regular use of washing machines affects the monthly electricity bill. As modern conveniences become increasingly common in domestic settings, understanding the underlying mechanics of power consumption is essential for effective household budgeting.

The total electricity consumption of any given laundry cycle is not a fixed figure, but rather a variable metric that depends heavily on several distinct operational factors. Specifically, total electricity consumption depends on machine capacity, model, washing mode, water temperature, and cycle duration, all of which dictate how hard the internal motor and heating elements must work.

To understand the baseline energy requirements, industry calculations point to specific power metrics associated with standard household appliances. The rated power of the washing machine stands at 500 watts, providing a clear benchmark for calculating the electrical load placed on the domestic grid during operation.

When operating this appliance under specific conditions, the mathematical conversion to electrical units becomes straightforward. Specifically, the energy consumed by a 500W machine in one hour amounts to 0.5 kWh or 0.5 units of electricity when running continuously at full capacity.

Managing these kilowatt-hour totals requires an awareness of the prevailing residential pricing structures established for domestic consumers. The official electricity tariff for the first 50 units in the residential category for 2024 is set at BDT 4.63 per unit.

Should a household's total monthly consumption exceed that initial threshold and move into the next consumption tier, a different pricing rate applies. The electricity tariff for 51 to 75 units in the residential category for 2024 increases to BDT 5.26 per unit.
