Researchers at University College Dublin, including Desmond Tobin, have highlighted the distinct impact that hard water can have on human hair health. Hard water is characterized by a significantly higher concentration of essential and heavy minerals, specifically noting the presence of calcium and magnesium within its composition.

When individuals wash their hair repeatedly using hard water, these abundant minerals do not simply wash away. Instead, the calcium and magnesium present in the water can gradually accumulate directly onto the surface of the hair strands, eventually creating a persistent and undesirable coating over time.

The formation of this mineral buildup on the hair creates unique challenges for routine hair maintenance and personal care. As the layers of calcium and magnesium accumulate, managing the texture and cleanliness of the hair requires targeted interventions to remove the mineral deposits.

To combat the stubborn buildup caused by hard water minerals, individuals often resort to using specific hair care products. A common approach to eliminating these accumulated mineral residues is the application of sulfate-containing shampoos during the washing process.

However, the use of sulfate-containing shampoos to remove hard water mineral buildup introduces a secondary concern for personal grooming and hygiene. Relying on these harsh cleansing agents can ultimately lead to the development of excessive dryness in both the hair and the sensitive skin of the scalp.
