The city of Hastings, Nebraska, plays host to a popular annual celebration known as Kool-Aid Days, which is officially held every year during the second weekend of August. This vibrant community festival honors a historically significant beverage that has deep roots in the local region, reflecting the enduring legacy of an iconic American refreshment.

The drink itself was originally developed in 1927 by an inventor named Edwin Perkins. Perkins formulated the product by successfully removing the liquid from an earlier beverage known as 'Fruit Smack,' thereby creating a stable powder form that was uniquely packaged in small, convenient envelopes for everyday consumers.

Following its creation, the powdered beverage was initially distributed and sold in wholesale grocery stores as well as candy stores. At the time of its initial market rollout, customers could purchase the product at a wholesale price of 10 cents per packet, choosing from a lineup of six distinct and original flavors: cherry, grape, lemon-lime, orange, raspberry, and strawberry.

As economic conditions shifted across the United States, the brand adapted to better serve consumers facing severe financial hardship. During the era of the Great Depression, the retail price per packet was officially reduced to just 5 cents, making the flavored drink an affordable treat for families during difficult times.

Today, the cultural and historical impact of the beverage is officially recognized far beyond its modest origins. Kool-Aid holds the distinguished title of being the official soft drink of the US state of Nebraska, cementing its permanent place in American history.
