The Fitzroy River, located in Rockhampton, Australia, has officially been selected as the official rowing and canoeing venue for the upcoming 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. The geographical location of the newly chosen sporting venue sits approximately 565 kilometers away from Brisbane, placing the high-profile Olympic events in a regional Australian setting.

Despite the unique geographical and wildlife challenges posed by the location, international sports authorities have given the venue their official backing. Both World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have granted the site a green light, confirming their approval of the Australian location for the international athletic competitions.

Addressing concerns regarding the local wildlife population—which includes approximately 500 formidable saltwater crocodiles inhabiting the river system—officials have maintained a resolute stance on athlete safety and venue viability. Jean-Christophe Rolland addressed the decision by stating that following a comprehensive analysis, they are certain the Fitzroy River is capable of delivering a fair competition while adhering strictly to the rules of Olympic and Paralympic rowing.

Echoing these sentiments regarding the technical suitability of the waterway, Thomas Konietzko noted that after the completion of a thorough technical evaluation, the confidence of the competing athletes has grown significantly. Konietzko added that the location is shaping up to be a magnificent track specifically for the canoe sprint events.

Andrew Liveris also offered a robust defense of the venue selection, drawing comparisons to other extreme natural elements encountered in elite sports. Remarking on the presence of the predators in the river, Liveris rhetorically asked if surfing is ever called off simply because the ocean contains sharks, urging critics to discard a defeatist mentality and adopt a positive outlook instead. Liveris further emphasized that this vital international recognition pushes their overall planning forward by a significant step.
