FIFA Modifies Sanctions on Argentina Players and Officials

FIFA has officially changed the conditions of the sanctions and suspensions previously imposed on Argentina national team players and officials. The original disciplinary measures were handed down following unwanted incidents during the 2026 World Cup final, where Spain defeated Argentina by a margin of 1-0 in the tournament held in July.

Following the disciplinary decisions, the Argentina Football Association (AFA) submitted a formal application to FIFA. The AFA requested that the suspensions imposed on the players and the association during the World Cup final be made applicable to 'A' category friendly matches and/or official matches, whichever comes first.

In response to this request, FIFA has now granted permission for the suspensions to be counted across friendly matches and official matches organized by Conmebol. The initial rulings by FIFA included severe suspensions for several key figures associated with the Argentina national team, alongside substantial financial penalties for the Argentine governing body.

Specifically, FIFA handed down a ten-match suspension to Leandro Paredes, a seven-match suspension to Nahuel Molina, a one-match suspension to Thiago Almada, and a three-match suspension to Roberto Ayala. In addition to these individual player and official bans, the Argentine organization was hit with a fine totaling 321,000 dollars and ordered to limit stadium attendance by fifty percent for their next two home matches.

Addressing the severity of these disciplinary actions, Andres Paton Urich stated that the punishments are considered excessive and that efforts will continue to reduce them. Meanwhile, the Argentina Football Association stated that it is awaiting a detailed explanation of the decision in order to protect its own rights and the rights of its players, which will allow them to file appropriate appeals to FIFA's Appeal Committee and ultimately to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
