The cultural and cinematic community in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is observing the birth anniversary of legendary film actor Prabir Mitra on August 18, 2026. Born on August 18, 1941, in Chandpur, the late actor’s ancestral home is located in Shakta, Keraniganj, Dhaka. Throughout his remarkable life, Mitra became a household name and a revered figure in the history of Bangladeshi cinema, leaving behind an enduring legacy of memorable performances that continue to resonate with audiences across generations.

Prabir Mitra’s journey into the film industry began when he was cast by director H. Akbar in the movie 'Jalchobi'. This debut marked the start of a prolific acting career that spanned decades and saw him share the screen with many stalwarts of the silver screen, including the late, renowned actor ATM Shamsuzzaman and visionary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak. His versatility and deep commitment to his craft quickly established him as one of the most dependable and respected character actors in the nation's film fraternity.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the cinematic arts, Mitra was honored with the prestigious National Film Award in 1983 for his stellar performance in the critically acclaimed movie 'Boro Bhalo Lok Chilo'. This accolade cemented his status as a master of his craft, capable of bringing profound emotional depth and authenticity to every role he undertook. His extensive filmography remains a cornerstone of classic Bangladeshi cinema, studied and admired by contemporary filmmakers and aspiring actors alike.

Despite his professional triumphs, the veteran actor’s personal life was marked by profound and devastating grief. His beloved wife passed away in the year 2000, leaving him to navigate the later stages of life without his lifelong companion. Tragically, the heartbreak continued years later when his younger son, Akash, passed away in 2012 at the young age of only 30, a loss that deeply affected the beloved actor during his final years.

Prabir Mitra eventually breathed his last on January 5, 2025, closing a monumental chapter in the annals of Bangladeshi film history. As cultural organizations, fans, and colleagues gather in Dhaka to reflect upon his extraordinary life and career on this August 18, 2026, they remember not only his towering talent on the silver screen but also the resilience with which he endured immense personal tragedies throughout his journey.
