Dhaka markets see persistent high prices for chicken, eggs and fish
Capital residents continue to face severe financial strain due to soaring prices for essential poultry, eggs and fish across local markets in Dhaka. Shoppers report that basic items remain persistently expensive, compounding daily hardship for middle-income households.
Consumers shopping in the capital city of Dhaka are continuing to grapple with elevated prices for essential commodities, notably poultry, eggs and various types of fish, which have caused significant suffering for ordinary citizens. The persistent high costs across local markets leave household budgets severely strained, with very little relief in sight for daily shoppers attempting to purchase basic nutritional items.
Poultry prices in the capital remain steady at high rates, according to local vendors. Anis Ahmed, a market trader, noted that prices have held firm compared to the previous week, stating that he sold broiler chicken for 190 taka per kilogram and Sonali chicken at 320 taka per kilogram. Meanwhile, native chicken is commanding a much higher price at 650 taka per kilogram, while beef is priced between 780 and 800 taka per kilogram.
The egg market is similarly burdensome for consumers, with standard white eggs selling at 130 taka per dozen, while brown eggs range from 140 to 150 taka per dozen. In local neighbourhood shops scattered throughout Dhaka, the price for a dozen eggs climbs even higher, reaching between 155 and 160 taka per dozen.
Fish markets in Dhaka present a daunting financial challenge for shoppers, with buyers noting that it is virtually impossible to find any fish priced below 250 taka. Abu Daud, a shopper visiting the market, expressed astonishment at the current rates, pointing out that even tilapia is selling for 250 to 260 taka per kilogram, making it increasingly difficult for middle-income families to manage their daily expenses.
A wide variety of fish is available across the capital at varying high rates. Pangas is selling for 230 to 250 taka per kilogram, medium-sizedrui is priced at 300 to 350 taka, while larger rui and catla range from 380 to 420 taka, and large rui reaches 450 to 500 taka. Other varieties include mrigel at 250 to 300 taka, farmed koi at 300 taka, native koi at 700 to 800 taka, farmed shing at 300 to 450 taka, pabda at 350 to 400 taka, vetki at 400 to 550 taka, poa at 260 taka, shol at 700 taka, tengra at 700 taka, bain at 600 to 800 taka, and shrimp commanding between 1,000 and 1,300 taka per kilogram. Hilsa prices are notably exorbitant, with fish weighing 900 grams to 1 kilogram selling for 2,500 taka, and those weighing 1 kilogram 300 grams costing nearly 3,000 taka.
Despite the wide array of aquatic products, fish traders indicate that market fluctuations remain minimal but unpredictable. Kফিল উদ্দিন, a fish vendor, explained that fish prices have not experienced major changes overall, though market rates frequently fluctuate by 20 to 30 taka from one day to the next, adding to the frustration of everyday consumers.
