Delhi-Meerut Expressway Tests Variable Speed Limits

A trial implementation of variable speed limits, which adjust according to specific times and prevailing road conditions, has officially been introduced on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in India. This new traffic management approach is designed to regulate vehicle speeds across different periods of the day and night to enhance safety on the major roadway.

According to a report published by Business Today, the trial implementation of these variable speed limits was officially launched on August 15. The system establishes distinct speed restrictions for various categories of vehicles, dividing the enforcement periods into specific blocks of time throughout the twenty-four-hour daily cycle.

Under the newly implemented trial guidelines for the overnight period, running from midnight to seven in the morning, the maximum permissible speed for private automobiles is set at sixty-five kilometers per hour. During this exact same overnight timeframe from midnight to seven in the morning, heavy commercial vehicles are restricted to a lower maximum speed limit of fifty kilometers per hour.

As daylight hours approach and traffic patterns shift, the speed limits are adjusted accordingly to manage congestion and safety during busier periods. Specifically, for the daytime window spanning from seven in the morning to five in the afternoon, the maximum speed limit for private vehicles is reduced to fifty-five kilometers per hour.

Similarly, during that same daytime period from seven in the morning until five in the afternoon, heavy vehicles face a stricter limit to account for their size and stopping distances. For these heavy vehicles operating between seven in the morning and five in the afternoon, the maximum allowed speed is restricted to forty-five kilometers per hour.

The ongoing trial on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway continues to enforce these time-dependent speed regulations for both private and heavy vehicles as authorities monitor the effectiveness of the variable speed limit system.
