China Cancels Argentina Football Team Tour After Lionel Messi Hong Kong Absence

China has officially cancelled the scheduled friendly matches for the Argentina national football team following controversy over star player Lionel Messi. The decision affects the planned fixtures that were originally set to take place in the Chinese locations of Hangzhou and Beijing.

The cancellation stems from an earlier incident in Hong Kong, where Inter Miami played a friendly match. During that event, Argentine forward Lionel Messi did not take to the pitch to play, triggering widespread frustration among fans and local authorities.

Following the controversy in Hong Kong, the Hangzhou Sports Bureau issued a detailed statement regarding the cancellation. The bureau explained that an organization had previously discussed playing a friendly match in March with the Argentina Football Association as a commercial event.

The Hangzhou Sports Bureau further elaborated on the cancellation by stating that the necessary conditions for holding the event were not being met, taking into account reasons that are known to everyone. Consequently, the authorities decided that the event had to be cancelled.

In the wake of the controversy and the subsequent cancellations, the Hong Kong government also raised questions regarding Messi's playing status. The government noted that just three days after the Hong Kong event, Messi was able to play actively and freely in Japan against Vissel Kobe, where he logged thirty minutes on the pitch, prompting officials to state that the government hopes organizers and teams will provide a reasonable explanation.

Amidst the fallout and cancelled matches in China, the Hong Kong match organizer, Tatler Asia, took steps to address fan grievances. The organization officially announced that it would provide a fifty percent refund of the ticket price to the forty thousand spectators who attended the match.
