Chattogram Flood Rehabilitation Project Launched With HSBC And BRAC
A new rehabilitation support project for families affected by sudden floods in the Chattogram region was officially launched at the Chattogram Circuit House. Funded by HSBC and implemented by BRAC, the seven-month initiative aims to assist disaster-hit communities.
A comprehensive rehabilitation support project aimed at assisting families affected by sudden floods in the Chattogram region was officially inaugurated on 30 August at the Chattogram Circuit House. The initiative, designed to provide crucial recovery assistance, is funded by HSBC and implemented by the development organization BRAC. The launching event brought together key officials and stakeholders to mark the commencement of the comprehensive relief and rebuilding efforts across designated disaster-hit zones.
The newly inaugurated rehabilitation initiative spans a duration of seven months and operates with a total financial allocation of 10 crore taka, provided entirely through funding from HSBC. According to the project details, the geographical scope covers multiple vulnerable areas, specifically including Banshkhali and Satkania upazilas within the Chattogram district, Chakaria upazila located in Cox's Bazar, as well as ward number 38 situated within the Chattogram city corporation area.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized the growing importance of increasing the active participation of the private sector and non-governmental organizations in national development and disaster rehabilitation work. He noted that in the past, there was a noticeable lack of effective coordination among the government, the private sector, and various NGO organizations. However, he highlighted that the current government is actively working to improve relationships and restructure cooperation by encouraging and supporting these various stakeholders, which ultimately leads to reduced corruption and ensures that work is completed more quickly and accurately.
Highlighting the practical benefits of collaborative public-private frameworks, Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury further remarked that it is not always easy for the government alone to deliver direct services across all sectors. He explained that when the private sector and NGOs are integrated into the delivery system, tasks are completed with greater efficiency while simultaneously reducing opportunities for waste and corruption. The event was also attended by other notable figures, including Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, Dr. Md. Ziauddin, Sarat Kumar Chowdhury, and Md. Mahbubur Rahman, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Bangladesh Bank, HSBC Bank, and BRAC.
