BFF Reschedules Domestic Football Season Amid Uncertainty Over ASEAN Cup

On August 17, Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president Tabith Awal addressed the media in Bangladesh to provide crucial updates regarding the upcoming domestic football season's schedule and the uncertainties surrounding participation in the international FIFA ASEAN Cup. The announcements come as the federation navigates multiple administrative and logistical challenges ahead of the competitive calendar.
A major casualty of the scheduling adjustments is the season-opening Challenge Cup match, which had been originally slated to begin on August 21. Confirming the postponement of this specific fixture, Tabith Awal stated, "২১ আগস্ট চ্যালেঞ্জ কাপ হচ্ছে না। আজ ক্লাব লাইসেনসিংয়ের শেষ দিন। আমরা আজ রাত পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করবো। এরপর সিদ্ধান্ত নেবো। ফেডারেশন কাপ ও লিগ ঘোষিত সূচি অনুযায়ী শুরুর ইচ্ছে রয়েছে।"
Addressing the broader domestic calendar, the BFF leadership indicated that despite the cancellation of the season's curtain-raiser, the federation still maintains its overall intention to commence both the prestigious Federation Cup and the main domestic league according to their previously announced schedules. However, these plans remain contingent on resolving pending club compliance issues.
A significant complication in the domestic buildup involves Bashundhara Kings, one of the prominent clubs in Bangladeshi football alongside Abahani Limited, Dhaka Mohammedan, Wanderers, and Arambagh. According to official disclosures, Bashundhara Kings still have ten active bans remaining against them and have formally requested an additional seven working days to address their situation.
Adding to the administrative workload, the final deadline for club licensing falls on August 17. The BFF president noted that the federation would wait until tonight to evaluate the submission status of the clubs before taking any definitive further actions regarding the league and cup competitions.
At the same time, questions regarding the FIFA ASEAN Cup remain unresolved. The federation's official statements on August 17 highlighted lingering uncertainties about whether teams from Bangladesh will participate in the regional tournament, leaving the ultimate international schedule open to further review by the governing body.
