Bapex Begins 3D Seismic Survey in Habiganj for New Gas Field
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex) has initiated a three-dimensional seismic survey in Habiganj's Madhabpur upazila to search for a new gas field. The survey activities will continue through June 2027 under a project that commenced in December 2025.

State-owned energy organization Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex) has officially commenced a tridimensional or three-dimensional (3D) seismic survey in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district. The primary objective of this extensive survey is to explore and identify potential new gas fields in the region, marking another step forward in the country's ongoing efforts to discover domestic natural energy resources.
According to the confirmed details of the initiative, the field-level survey activities officially began on Monday morning. The operations started simultaneously across multiple areas within Madhabpur upazila, specifically targeting the villages of Daspara located in Chatiain union, as well as Paramanandpur village situated in Shahjahanpur.
The current seismic survey operates under a scheduled project timeline that officially began implementation in December 2025. Following the commencement late last year, technical teams and field personnel have now rolled out the physical operations on the ground in Habiganj to gather crucial subsurface geological data.
Authorities have outlined that the ongoing 3D seismic survey activities in these areas of Madhabpur will not be a brief undertaking. Instead, the comprehensive geophysical data collection is scheduled to continue uninterrupted until June 2027, giving technical experts adequate time to thoroughly map the subterranean structures.
This major exploration drive by Bapex is expected to provide detailed subsurface mapping of the targeted zones in Habiganj. The findings gathered from the Daspara, Paramanandpur, and surrounding areas will ultimately guide the organization in determining the exact locations for future exploratory drilling and potential natural gas extraction.
