The Bangladesh under-20 football team suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Syria in their second match of the AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers, held recently at the Dustlik Stadium in Tashkent. This latest setback follows the team's earlier defeat in their opening match against Uzbekistan in the ongoing tournament.
With these two consecutive losses in the qualifying round, any remaining mathematical possibilities or hopes of progressing past the group stage have now completely ended for the young Bangladeshi squad. Despite the elimination, the team still has one remaining fixture scheduled for the tournament.
Looking ahead to their final fixture, Bangladesh is scheduled to face India next Sunday in what will now serve as a concluding and formal tie. Historically, encounters against Syrian sides have proven difficult, as Bangladesh youth teams and national men's teams have previously played three matches each against Syria, losing all six of those previous encounters across all levels.
During the recent encounter at Dustlik Stadium, Syria established dominance throughout the duration of the match, maintaining approximately 70 percent of the overall ball possession. The Syrian side continually pressured the Bangladeshi defense, accumulating a total of 18 shots throughout the game, with 9 of those attempts successfully hitting the target.
In stark contrast, the Bangladesh attacking line struggled to create meaningful opportunities against the Syrian defense, managing a mere 3 shots toward the goalmouth throughout the entire ninety minutes. Of those 3 attempted shots, not a single one managed to hit the target, highlighting the one-sided nature of the match.
The breakthrough for Syria arrived late in the first half of the encounter just before the half-time interval. Belal Al-Musli opened the scoring by finding the back of the net in the 44th minute, and shortly thereafter, Marios Praxiteles doubled the lead during the additional time added on at the end of the first half.
