Bangladesh U-20 Coach Sacked After Defeat, Cites Death Threats
Gerard Jones has lost his job as the Bangladesh U-20 head coach following consecutive losses in the AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers. From the United States, he revealed he received severe personal attacks and death threats online.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has officially terminated the contract of under-20 national team head coach Gerard Jones. The decision to dismiss the coach came just one day after the team suffered a heavy three-goal defeat against the Syria national under-20 football team. Following the loss, which saw Bangladesh beaten by a three-to-nil margin, the governing body acted swiftly to remove Jones from his position as head coach of the squad.
The dismissal took place on September 4, 2024, after the team struggled during the AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers. Although the official announcement from the federation confirmed his relief from duties and the cancellation of his agreement, the official notification did not specify the precise reasons behind the termination. Jones had spent approximately nine weeks working with the team, bringing nearly two decades of coaching experience to the role in South Asia.
Four days after his contract was cancelled, on September 8, 2024, Jones took to social media from Kansas City, United States, to share a detailed statement on Facebook. In his public post, the former coach revealed that he had faced severe backlash following the team's tournament performance. He stated that he received extremely poor messages, had his personal information leaked online, and was subjected to direct threats of being killed.
Addressing the online abuse, Jones remarked that while criticizing football decisions is entirely fair, personal attacks, the leakage of private information, and death threats are completely unacceptable. Highlighting his personal life, he noted that he is a husband, a father, and a son, emphasizing the human toll of the harassment he experienced after leaving his post.
Reflecting on his tenure, Jones explained that his mission in Bangladesh extended beyond immediate national team results, encompassing a broader vision for youth development, coach education, talent identification, and the integration of expatriate players. However, he noted that the time available to implement these crucial plans was extremely limited. He also acknowledged that the team failed to consistently play the football they produced in training, looking unrecognizable compared to the principles established during preparation, though he insisted that the work and achievements during his tenure should not be erased by two international match results.
