Bangladesh PM Adviser Outlines 2029 Energy Security Roadmap

Prime Minister's Adviser Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir addressed reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka on August 20, 2026, to discuss the country's pressing energy crisis and outline future security measures. Speaking directly to the media, Dr. Titumir provided a comprehensive overview of the government's strategic approach to stabilizing the national energy sector amidst various operational and supply chain hurdles.

During the briefing, Dr. Titumir elaborated on the specific circumstances surrounding the failure of certain liquefied natural gas shipments to arrive as scheduled. He explained that the non-arrival of these critical energy cargoes was driven by what he termed a 'force majeure' situation, noting that such unexpected developments are a regular and recognized component of standard commercial operations and business activities.

Looking ahead to long-term stability, the Adviser highlighted a definitive timeline for structural improvements in the nation's energy availability. He stated that relief in the energy situation will become noticeable during the winter months, while a clear and visible progression in overall conditions will be fully apparent to the public by the upcoming summer season.

Dr. Titumir also outlined ambitious strategic targets aimed at transforming the country's energy landscape over the next few years. The government has established a firm objective to guarantee the necessary energy security required for a rapidly expanding, large-scale economy by the year 2029, incorporating diversified generation methods into the national grid.

As part of these forward-looking security measures, specific renewable energy milestones have been formally set. Authorities are targeting the generation of up to 5,000 megawatts of electricity exclusively from solar power sources by November 2029, supported by strong public uptake as evidenced by approximately 36,000 applications received under the net metering system.
