Bangladesh NBR Issues Income Tax Return Rules and Exemption Limits
Bangladesh has announced updated income tax return rules and tax-free income thresholds for various categories of taxpayers. The National Board of Revenue confirmed that the submission process began on 1 July 2026.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh has officially released the comprehensive regulations for submitting income tax returns alongside the designated seven income sectors and updated tax-free income limits. According to the announcement made on 20 August 2026, the updated framework is designed to streamline the tax submission process for citizens across the country.
A significant change highlighted by the authorities is the timeline for submitting tax paperwork. The NBR confirmed that the official process for filing income tax returns began on 1 July 2026. Under the new provisions introduced this year, taxpayers will now have the unprecedented flexibility to submit their annual returns throughout the entire year rather than being restricted to a traditional seasonal deadline.
The newly published guidelines outline specific tax-free income thresholds categorized by the demographic profile of the individual taxpayers in Bangladesh. For general male taxpayers, the tax-free income limit has been established at 375,000 taka. Meanwhile, higher thresholds have been designated for specific groups to provide financial relief and social support.
Specifically, the tax-free income limit is set at 425,000 taka for women and senior citizens aged 65 years or older. Third-gender taxpayers and individuals with disabilities benefit from a higher tax-free limit of up to 500,000 taka. Furthermore, gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters and July fighters enjoy an even higher tax-free income threshold of up to 525,000 taka.
In addition to these category-based exemptions, the NBR guidelines provide supplementary financial considerations for families with special needs. Taxpayers who have a disabled child are eligible for an additional tax exemption of up to 50,000 taka, further easing the financial burden on qualifying households.
As part of the comprehensive return-filing framework, the regulatory authorities have also specified the documentation requirements regarding income sources. The NBR officially confirmed that individuals are required to report and disclose earnings originating from seven distinct categories of income when filing their annual tax returns.
