The government of Bangladesh has launched a significant new initiative aimed at bringing structure and regulation to the nation's widespread fleet of battery-powered rickshaws and easy bikes. The formal announcement regarding these sweeping regulatory measures was officially made on August 15, 2026, marking a critical turning point for the country's informal transport sector.
For years, battery-powered rickshaws and easy bikes have expanded rapidly across Bangladesh. However, this massive growth has occurred largely unchecked and completely unregulated, operating in the absence of a reliable national registry to track the sheer volume of vehicles on public roadways.
To accurately gauge the scale of the phenomenon, the Bangladesh Power Development Board has conducted assessments regarding the country's transit landscape. According to current estimates from the Bangladesh Power Development Board, there are approximately 45 to 50 lakh battery-powered rickshaws and easy bikes operating right now across the entire country.
In response to the logistical and safety challenges posed by millions of unmonitored vehicles, the government has officially proposed a comprehensive set of measures. These newly unveiled policy steps are specifically designed to rein in the largely chaotic sector through structured administrative controls.
Among the proposed solutions, authorities intend to designate authorised factories for manufacturing and assembly, introduce mandatory vehicle registration and formal licensing, clearly define approved operational routes, and implement strict caps on total vehicle numbers nationwide.
