Bangladesh Faces Silent Diesel Shortage Amid Surging Demand and Power Crisis

Bangladesh is currently facing a silent yet mounting shortage of diesel as the country struggles with an ongoing power and gas crisis. The situation has intensified significantly across the nation, driven by a sharp rise in fuel demand from various sectors trying to cope with the unreliable energy supply.

According to verified reports, the country is currently unable to supply approximately 25 percent of its total gas demand. This severe shortfall in the national energy grid has had a direct cascading effect on industrial production and daily life, leaving consumers and business owners with few alternatives.

As a direct consequence of the widespread electricity and gas shortages, the utilization of diesel-powered generators has increased exponentially. Both industrial factories and private individuals have turned to these generators as a primary backup power source to maintain operations and basic daily activities during outages.

The surge in generator usage has created unprecedented pressure on fuel distribution networks. In the Dhaka division alone, the demand for diesel has escalated dramatically, reaching approximately 10 to 12 times the normal volume typically recorded during standard operational periods.

Fuel station operators are struggling to keep up with the overwhelming consumer needs on the ground. Previously, individual filling pumps recorded a modest daily demand ranging between 4,000 and 5,000 litres; however, that figure has now surged to an extraordinary 20,000 litres per day per pump.

In response to the mounting pressure on fuel supplies and the escalating crisis, formal action has been taken by industry representatives. The Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association has officially sent a letter addressed to the chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to highlight the critical situation.
