Bangladesh Bank launches instant digital micro-loans for emergency bills
Bangladesh Bank has introduced instant digital micro-loans ranging from 50 to 10,000 BDT through banking apps to cover emergency service bills and fees. The pilot program will run for six months with loan terms set at seven, 15, or 30 days.

Bangladesh Bank has introduced a new instant digital micro-loan facility enabling citizens to secure funding ranging from 50 to 10,000 BDT directly through banking applications. Designed specifically to help individuals cover emergency service bills and required fees, the initiative represents a significant step forward in the country's financial sector.
According to the announced framework, the borrowed funds cannot be withdrawn as physical cash. Instead, the money must be used directly for settling designated bills and specific fees, ensuring that the financial assistance is strictly directed toward meeting essential consumer needs.
To evaluate the operational framework and consumer response, participating commercial institutions will implement the initiative on a trial basis for an initial period of six months. Borrowers utilizing the new digital credit facility will be offered repayment terms of seven days, 15 days, or 30 days depending on the specific arrangement.
City Bank Deputy Managing Director Arup Haider commented on the initiative, stating that the new service will create a major impact on building a digital and cashless Bangladesh. He noted that the service will help people meet emergency requirements while remaining non-drawable in cash.
Haider further emphasized that because the loans are restricted to specific service payments and cannot be withdrawn physically, they will be utilized directly for fulfilling fundamental demands. This mechanism marks the beginning of a fresh journey toward establishing a cashless society through targeted digital financial services.
