Bangladesh Bank has provided extended time for the rescheduling and restructuring of loans for large borrowers who have taken loans of one thousand crore taka or more. This regulatory decision comes in response to specific economic pressures currently affecting the country's industrial and financial sectors, as confirmed officially by the central bank.

The announcement regarding this policy measure was made through a formal circular issued by the central bank on Monday, August 31. Shahriyar Siddiqui, serving as the assistant spokesperson for Bangladesh Bank, officially confirmed the implementation and details of the newly issued directive to the public and media.

Explaining the rationale behind the central bank's decision, Shahriyar Siddiqui stated that the ongoing war situation in the Middle East is exerting a temporary negative impact on Bangladesh's export sector, mirroring similar challenges faced by various other countries around the globe. He further noted that alongside these geopolitical tensions, domestic energy crises are actively disrupting production within export-oriented industrial institutions across the nation.

According to the assistant spokesperson, these combined macroeconomic challenges are directly diminishing the overall debt-servicing capacity of borrowers, making it increasingly difficult for them to meet their scheduled financial obligations to banking institutions. The confluence of the Middle East conflict, domestic energy shortages, and high interest rates has collectively necessitated the provision of additional time for these substantial financial commitments.

In the broader context of the nation's financial governance, this directive aligns with ongoing regulatory efforts within the banking sector. Specifically, Bangladesh Bank has previously adopted a comprehensive eighteen-month roadmap specifically designed and targeted toward reducing the volume of defaulted loans nationwide.
