Bangladesh Approves 16 Projects Worth BDT 65,517 Crore at ECNEC Meeting

On September 16, 2026, a crucial meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) was held at the Public Administration Meeting Room of the Bangladesh Secretariat. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presided over the high-level administrative session, which focused on evaluating and approving vital national development initiatives designed to enhance the country's infrastructure, transportation network, and public health sector.

During the official proceedings, a total of 16 development projects were presented before the council for formal consideration and approval. Out of these total presentations, 12 initiatives have been categorized as entirely new projects, while the remaining 4 proposals involve necessary revisions to previously undertaken developmental works across various sectors of the economy.

The comprehensive financial outlay for the 16 proposed projects amounts to a staggering BDT 65,517 crore and 26 lakh. To finance this massive national expenditure, the government has structured a multi-source funding strategy that includes domestic resources, foreign loans, and institutional grants from international development partners such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

A breakdown of the financial allocation reveals that the government of Bangladesh will provide BDT 25,278 crore and 12 lakh from its own internal resources. Meanwhile, project loans secured from external development partners will contribute BDT 40,166 crore and 67 lakh, alongside a contribution of BDT 72 crore and 47 lakh coming directly as grants or organizational funding from the concerned agencies.

The newly approved and revised portfolio features several mega-scale infrastructural investments. Notably, the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line-5) Southern Route has been allocated an estimated expenditure of BDT 45,503 crore and 77 lakh. Additionally, the first revision of the Bogura-Sirajganj new dual-gauge railway construction project accounts for BDT 4,667 crore and 42 lakh.

Furthermore, the initiative to introduce electrical traction on the Narayanganj-Dhaka-Joydebpur railway route involves a cost of BDT 3,822 crore and 51 lakh, though specific reports like Jago News cite the figure at BDT 3,823 crore and 52 lakh. Beyond transportation, the health sector received substantial backing with a dedicated tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and malaria combat project valued at BDT 4,039 crore and 6 lakh.
