Bagerhat Shrine Area Sees Surge in Popularity for Tea and Betel Leaf

In the southern district of Bangladesh, the area adjacent to the historic Khan Jahan Ali (R.) shrine in Bagerhat has witnessed a remarkable surge in the popularity of its local milk tea and assorted betel leaves. According to confirmed reports, this vibrant culinary trend has been a regional favorite for more than two decades, drawing crowds to the approximately 30 tea stalls operating within the shrine premises.
Local vendors report bustling daily sales driven by both residents and travelers. Tea seller Mohammad Tuhin notes that visitors arrive from far and wide to experience the shrine's famous refreshments, stating that he personally sells about 600 cups of milk tea, 200 to 300 cups of colored tea, and 500 to 600 betel leaves on a daily basis. Fellow vendor Asad Islam echoes this sentiment, mentioning that customers from outside the local area frequently outnumber neighborhood residents.
Patrons frequent the stalls not just for the food and beverages, but for the communal atmosphere. Visitor Aminul Islam explains that gathering with friends for tea during holidays like Eid and Durga Puja has become a cherished tradition that completes their breaks, praising the careful preparation by shopkeepers. Another regular, Tafsid Islam, remarks that the taste of the tea is incomparable and serves as a point of pride when entertaining guests from other districts.
Beyond the tea, the specialized betel leaves prepared with colorful spices are a major draw for the public. Hossain Sheikh shares that the distinct flavor draws people from surrounding villages exclusively to enjoy the local betel preparation, noting that shopkeepers craft them meticulously with various spices.
Fakir Tarikul Islam highlights the broader tourism context, pointing out that both the Khan Jahan Ali (R.) shrine and the nearby Sixty Dome Mosque are recognized parts of world heritage, attracting domestic and international tourists alike. This steady stream of travelers has fostered a thriving hub of commerce and leisure over the past twenty-four years or more, where families and friends spend hours chatting over tea and betel leaves while local authorities maintain continuous security to ensure a comfortable environment.
