AmCham Bangladesh Marks 30 Years as US Bilateral Trade Soars

The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh, commonly known as AmCham, is officially celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary this year. To mark this significant occasion, the organization has highlighted the ongoing trajectory of bilateral trade and investment between Bangladesh and the United States. Syed Mohammad Kamal serves as the president of AmCham, guiding the organization through its current phase of advocacy and commercial engagement within the country.

Reflecting on the historical economic ties between the two nations, trade data from the 1990s reveals a modest beginning. During that decade, the total bilateral trade between Bangladesh and the United States stood at approximately 634 million US dollars. Over the subsequent decades, economic relations have deepened substantially, paving the way for a major expansion in commercial exchanges and business partnerships.

That historical figure contrasts sharply with the current economic reality. According to recent trade assessments, bilateral trade between Bangladesh and the United States has experienced a phenomenal surge, currently reaching an impressive 1.37 billion US dollars. This massive growth underscores the strengthening economic bridge between the two trading partners over the three decades since AmCham's inception.

As AmCham commemorates three decades of operations in Bangladesh, the organization continues to engage with various stakeholders to foster a more robust business environment. The chamber's leadership, headed by President Syed Mohammad কামাল, remains focused on addressing structural financial practices within the domestic market, noting that approximately 72 percent of all financial transactions within the country are still conducted in cash.
