7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia, Killing Two

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia on Saturday, August 15, at 5:58 AM local time, according to reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and international news agencies including AFP. The severe natural disaster has resulted in at least two reported deaths so far, sending shockwaves through the region and leaving local residents in a state of profound terror.

According to the USGS and Indonesia's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency, the epicenter of the massive tremor was located in the seabed 68 kilometers northwest of Ende city, situated within the East Nusa Tenggara province. Geological data confirmed that the earthquake originated at a very shallow depth of just 10 kilometers beneath the earth's surface, which significantly amplified the destructive shaking felt across the affected areas.

The violent ground motion triggered immediate panic among the local population. Eyewitnesses described scenes of absolute chaos as people fled their homes and sought safety. A resident from Nagekeo city recounted the terrifying experience to reporters, stating that the tremor was exceptionally forceful. The resident added that people were screaming and running around in utter panic, noting it was pure good fortune that they happened to be outside their house when the disaster struck.

The devastation was also witnessed firsthand in other coastal zones. Yohanna Embun, a local resident, described the extensive wreckage left in the wake of the powerful tremor. She stated that many houses in their town had been completely destroyed and that people were extremely terrified during the earthquake itself, adding that she watched with her own eyes as a building in the port area collapsed to the ground.

In the immediate aftermath of the offshore tremor, authorities acted swiftly by issuing a formal tsunami warning for four eastern provinces to protect coastal populations from potential giant waves. However, after monitoring seismic data and ocean conditions, officials subsequently withdrew the tsunami warning. The event inevitably evokes memories of Indonesia's tragic seismic history, specifically the catastrophic 2004 earthquake of 9.1 magnitude that resulted in the deaths of 170,000 people.
